Activities

A positive and uplifting atmosphere can set the tone for a resident’s stay. Schervier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center employ outgoing and friendly professional staff to create social programs and activities. Many of our residents spend time volunteering while others spend their leisure participating in our in-house activities and festivities.

Each resident is given a calendar to keep them informed of upcoming events such as birthday parties, musical programs, outings and other special events. Friends and family are always welcome to visit and attend our special events.

Specific activities include:

  • Monthly resident council meetings
  • Quarterly family council meetings
  • Annual centenarian luncheon with the Bronx Borough President’s office
  • Musical performances/Groups
  • Current events group which is held once per week in the library
  • Reading the newspaper – Our residents buy their own subscription for newspapers. When available, our volunteers read the newspaper to our residents.
  • Singing/Choral Group
  • Fitness activities available in all units
  • Stretching exercises available in all units
  • Wellness Groups provide aromatherapy, hand massages, and relaxation exercises
  • Entertainment available every weekend and on special occasions/events
  • Games
  • Reminiscence Groups

  • Arts and Crafts Groups
  • Book Club
  • Baking Club for our Dementia Care Unit

We do provide special events and holiday-themed celebrations for Valentines Day, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, and Elder American Month to name a few. Our Therapeutic Recreation staff has current events groups as part of their own calendar of activities each month. Community Volunteer Programs

Our community volunteer programs visit our residents during various times throughout the year. Below is a list of the volunteers that visit and how often they spend time with our residents.

St. Michaels Academy – St. Michaels Academy visits approximately 3-4 times per year. They send students to volunteer for Community Service Day in order to teach them the value of performing and experiencing community service.

Mitzvah Day – On Mitzvah Day, members of a Jewish Synagogue recruit individuals to come and volunteer. Volunteers come from different churches or synagogues. They bring plants to donate to the residents that student volunteers have planted. Sometimes they also give out crochet lap afghans made by members of their place of worship.

Knights of Columbus – Knights of Columbus members will come during the Christmas holidays to sing for our residents on the units.

Professional Singers – A group of professional singers comes every year during the holidays. They go from floor to floor caroling.

Student Volunteers – Students from the nearby high schools are recruited to volunteer during the school year to fulfill their community service requirements.

Herbert H. Lehman College – Herbert H. Lehman college students complete internship requirements in different departments (ie: dietary, recreation) at our facility.

Montefiore Mosholu Community Center – These students are recruited for the summer months to work throughout the facility in different departments.

NYC Department of Aging – Senior employment program.

International Christian Fellowship Choir – This choir comes and performs for the residents every other month.

Teen Voices Broadway Revue – This musical group of teens puts on a Broadway show for our residents.

Grammar/Middle School – These children make holiday cards and small ornaments for the residents for the holidays
(Easter/Valentine’s Day Christmas, etc).

P.S. 24 Grammar School Glee Club – This group of students comes to performs for the residents.
